Multicultural wedding in the Boston library

Sophie and Avik tied the knot on an unforgettable day that reflected both their personalities and cultural roots. The two, who live in Boston, Massachusetts, have known each other since their school days. Their story began in a classroom where a group project laid the foundation for a friendship that eventually turned into love. After nearly a decade of shared experiences, Avik proposed to Sophie in the fall of 2021.

The wedding took place in one of Boston’s most impressive buildings – a public library, whose architecture and symbolic meaning were perfect for the couple. Here, Sophie and Avik combined elegance with modernity while honoring their different roots. Sophie, Jewish-American with Colombian roots, and Avik, Hindu-American with Indian roots, created a ceremony that united their cultures in a unique way.

The big day

The day began with moments of togetherness: Sophie and Avik spent precious time with their families and groomsmen before seeing each other for the first time at their ‘first look’. This intimate moment was full of emotion – laughter, tears and anticipation. Before the ceremony, the wedding officiant, a close friend of Sophie’s, led the closest family members and wedding party through a meditation that helped to consciously experience the moment.

The wedding ceremony itself was a harmonious combination of both traditions. The couple stood under a huppa decorated with flowers, exchanged personal vows and incorporated rituals such as circling a fire and blessing the wine and bread. The ceremony, which was supported and co-created by both families, lasted 30 minutes and yet left a lasting impression on all the guests.

Attention to detail

Special attention was paid to the small details that made this day so unique. The floral arrangements included flowers from Colombia and Sophie’s wedding ring was enhanced by Colombian emeralds – a quiet but powerful tribute to her roots. The seating cards were draped in an old index card box, accompanied by floral arrangements symbolizing the themes of “love”, “friendship” and “adventure”. These motifs were also ever-present in their relationship.

Culinary delights included mini lobster rolls during the cocktail reception, which were a charming homage to Boston’s coastal character. The couple’s outfits also reflected the style and significance of the day: Sophie wore a classic modern Pronovias gown, while Avik dazzled in a bespoke tuxedo with an embroidered wedding date.

The celebration

After an emotional ceremony, the evening transitioned seamlessly into a celebration full of joy. An unofficial after-party visit to a popular Boston pub, followed by an exuberant get-together with family and friends at Sophie’s parents’ house, made the wedding an event that none of those present will ever forget.

Advice for future couples

Sophie and Avik emphasize the importance of taking time for your relationship during the wedding planning process. “Remember why you want to get married and let that be the focus of your engagement.” They also recommend consciously allowing yourselves little moments of peace and quiet on your wedding day.

Sophie and Avik’s wedding was more than a celebration of their love. It was a symbol of how different cultures and life paths can merge into something very special – amidst the rich history and charm of Boston.
